Dual Flashlight

All-in-one utility app launched on the App Store

Overview

Dual Flashlight is an all-in-one utility app provided for outdoor use, combining key features such as a flashlight, screen brightness control, bear deterrent sound, and Morse code SOS.

Inspired by 2025 mobile utility trends that emphasize practicality and multifunctional integration, the goal was to make these essential tools easily accessible in one place — fast, intuitive, and reliable in any situation.

Goal

Designing a Simple, All-in-One Outdoor Tool

The main goal was to launch a fully functional app within a three-month timeline. Our team aimed to design and release an all-in-one utility app that brings together key features in one simple and intuitive experience. Beyond building the features, the project was about learning how to bring an idea to life under real constraints planning, designing, developing, and releasing a product as a complete cycle.

Challenge

Balancing speed, quality, and communication

With only three months and a small team, the biggest challenge was balancing speed, quality, and communication. As the sole designer, I had to quickly translate the project leader’s concept into a clear, user-friendly visual language while working closely with the PM and developer to ensure technical feasibility. Time constraints forced us to prioritize essential features, make quick decisions, and iterate fast based on feedback.

My impact

Led the design of the user interface, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes, ensuring a clear and consistent user experience across all screens.

Developed a visual system including UI components, colours, and illustrations — tailored to the app’s purpose and outdoor context.

Conducted competitive research on existing utility apps in the App Store to identify gaps and opportunities for differentiation.

Communication between the PM and developers by translating design intent into actionable feedback, ensuring alignment between visuals and implementation.

Design approach

How I approached the design balancing clarity and visual depth

The design emphasizes intuitive interaction and visual simplicity, reflecting the essence of a utility app.

Each icon clearly communicates its function, making navigation quick and effortless.

The main colour reinforces a sense of trust, focus, and stability, commonly associated with deep navy tones. Rooted in color psychology, this tone reduces visual fatigue and creates a balanced, trustworthy impression that supports the app’s practical identity.

Outcome

Officially launched on the App Store

Bear Bell

It features a bear-repelling sound function with adjustable sound levels as needed.

Mosquito Repellent

Features an ultrasonic mosquito repellent, with a ripple animation that appears to show when it’s active.

SOS

This feature uses the rear flashlight to transmit Morse code signals for emergency rescue requests.

Final takeways

If I had more time

To meet the launch goal within three months, our team prioritized quick internal reviews focused on intuitiveness.

With more time, I would have expanded user testing to validate how easily users could access key functions and understand the icons, then refined the design to make the app even more user-friendly.

What I learned

Through this project, I learned that design goes far beyond creating visuals — it’s about collaboration, communication, and time management. I developed the ability to understand the project leader’s intent and deliver my part effectively within a tight timeline.

Working under limited resources and a fixed schedule taught me to set clear priorities, make quick decisions, and adapt designs efficiently through short feedback cycles. Most importantly, experiencing the entire process of turning an idea into a real product strengthened my sense of ownership and helped me grow as a designer.
